India, along with seven other countries, has launched a pioneering initiative aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the fashion and construction industries.
About the Initiative
Funding: It is a $45-million programme, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under the Integrated Programme on Eliminating Hazardous Chemicals from Supply Chains.
Duration: It spans six years and leverages an additional $295 million from other sources for amplified impact.
Participating Countries: India, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mongolia, Pakistan, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Objective:
- Transform the fashion (textile) and construction industries to minimize their environmental footprint.
- Focus on regenerative design, use of sustainable materials, resource-efficient production, and responsible purchasing practices.
Leadership: It is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with FAO, UNDP, and UNIDO.
