Smart Cities Mission: Progress and Key Highlights

Under the Smart Cities Mission (SCM), significant progress has been made with 8,066 projects worth Rs 1,64,669 crore initiated. Among these, 7,352 projects (91%) worth Rs 1,47,366 crore have been completed, showcasing the mission’s effectiveness in transforming urban infrastructure and governance.

  • Area-Based Development (ABD): Focused development in selected areas of a city to create model zones of smart infrastructure.

  • Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs): Established to ensure effective program implementation.
  • Funding Model: Encourages multiple funding sources, including public-private partnerships (PPP).

Key Achievements

  • Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs): All 100 Smart Cities have operational ICCCs. These centers leverage technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Data Analytics for efficient city management.
  • Public Safety: Installation of over 84,000 CCTV cameras for enhanced crime prevention and traffic regulation.
  • Solid Waste Management: 66 cities employ technology-driven waste collection using RFID-enabled vehicles.
  • Health Services: Deployment of 172 e-health centers and 152 health ATMs, improving healthcare accessibility.
  • COVID-19 Adaptation: Cities adapted ICCCs and smart technologies for pandemic management, showcasing resilience and innovation.
